Story Highlights:

Alex Bregman injured his quad against Baltimore Orioles on Friday.

Bregman has been on the IL list for more than two months in 2021.

The matchup between Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles on Friday saw All-Star Alex Bregman leave the field early. In the fifth inning, the 31-year-old singled off the left field wall and came up lame after rounding first base.

Alex Cora's update on Alex Bregman

Immediately Alex Bregman signaled the medical staff for assistance. Due to this, he was forced to leave the game and initial reports suggest that he has injured his quad. He was hoping that it would be normal the next day but that wasn't the case. On Saturday, Bregman woke up in excruciating pain.

Alex Cora revealed that the injury is way worse than what Bregman had thought. He will undergo an MRI which will further tell the extend of the injury. Meanwhile, Boston Red Sox reporter Christopher Smith shared the details on his injury on his X account (formerly known as Twitter).

Red Sox 3B Alex Bregman (sore quad) told Alex Cora this morning it's 'worse' than he thought. He's headed for an MRI now. Rafael Devers is not a candidate to play third base as of now, Cora said. He will remain as the DH. Red Sox could make a roster move at some point today, Smith wrote.

With his injury being way worse, Alex Bregman might be heading on to IL list. This will not be the first time that Bregman has injured his quad. He has been on the IL list for more than two months in 2021. In the slugger's absence, there are no plans to play Rafael Devers at his primary position at third base. Cora spoke that Devers would remain the designated hitter for the team.

Alex Cora's option at third base with Alex Bregman out

Alex Cora has multiple options at his disposal with Alex Bregman out. Recently, Nick Sogard was recalled from Triple-A on May 10 after Romy Gonzalez got injured.

Cora has the options of Ceddance Rafaela, Abraham Toro and Connor Wong to replace Bregman at third base. Kristian Campbell will likely not be an option. Cora even has Marcelo Mayer, a player who has experience at his side. Currently, he is down at Triple-A.

Saturday's match between Red Sox and Orioles will see Nick Sogard suiting up in place for the injured Bregman. He even replaced him on Friday, showing out at the plate. He finished the match with 3-for-6 with a run batted in and will look to do the same the next time he hears his name.
