Before making a name for themselves in the Major League Baseball (MLB), Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts and Texas Rangers Corey Seager had short-lived first jobs that taught them valuable lessons in life.
Mookie Betts and Corey Seager's first job before Baseball glory
For most of the players in the MLB, before turning professional and global superstars, they usually work at a hotel or athletic stores to take care of their daily expenses. On Tuesday, Chris Rose was on a round where he visited MLB clubhouses and asked one question to several stars including Betts and Seager.
What was your first job?
The Dodgers star used to work at Finish Line, a popular athletic shoe store. However, his stay at the shoe store was short-lived as after two-weeks he realised that it wasn't for him.
It was at Finish Line, Betts said. I worked for two weeks. I hated it. My dad told me, 'As long as you keep the grades up, you don't have to work anymore.' I think he just did it to prove a point. I got one paycheck—then taxes came and got it. I had zero clue about money management, so it was gone.
The biggest lesson that Betts learned from the job was financial management.
On the other hand, Corey Seager's first job was as a scorekeeper for 8U basketball. The experience left him with one conclusion that he never wanted to coach youth sports.
I was a scorekeeper for eight-and-under basketball. It wasn’t great. Then you realize — I never want to coach 8U or 12U in any sport, Seager said.
The chaos created by the young kids while playing basketball made him realise that managing youth teams wasn't for him.
Mookie Betts and Corey Seager look forward to the MLB Opening Day
Both Mookie Betts and Corey Seager will be featuring for their respective teams on March 27th, the Opening Day for MLB teams.
While the Dodgers kicked off their 2025 regular season in a two-game Tokyo Series against Chicago Cubs, which they comfortably won as they will now take on Detroit Tigers on Thursday. But, Betts didn't feature in both the games as he was suffering from a stomach issue but he will be suiting up against Tigers.
Meanwhile, Seager and Texas Rangers will take on Boston Red Sox on Thursday at the Globe Life Field. Seager ended his 2024 season prematurely after going through a sports hernia surgery in September. The shortstop is fully fit and will be rearing to go in 2025.
