The New Orleans Pelicans have been dealt another injury setback involving franchise cornerstone Zion Williamson, casting uncertainty over their momentum as the regular season intensifies.
Zion Williamson exits early against Utah Jazz
Williamson’s latest injury concern surfaced during Saturday night’s road matchup against the Utah Jazz. The Pelicans forward left the game early in the second quarter after appearing to tweak his right ankle. He immediately headed to the locker room for further medical evaluation, raising concerns among fans and teammates alike.
Shortly after assessing the situation, the Pelicans issued an official update on social media that confirmed the worst for the remainder of the contest.
“Zion Williamson (right ankle) will not return to tonight’s game at Utah,” the Pelicans posted on X.
The announcement came as a blow, particularly considering Zion Williamson had managed to avoid the injury report in recent weeks. Saturday’s setback now places his availability for upcoming games in doubt.
A season marked by injury interruptions
Injuries have unfortunately become a recurring theme in Williamson’s campaign. The former No. 1 overall pick has already missed 16 of the team’s 61 games this season due to various health issues. While he had not missed a game since Dec. 11 prior to Saturday’s incident, the ankle concern now threatens to disrupt that stretch of relative consistency.
Before exiting against Utah, Williamson had been putting together another productive year. Across 44 appearances entering Saturday, the two-time All-Star averaged 21.9 points on an efficient 58.5% shooting from the field. He also contributed 6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.1 steals in 29.9 minutes per game, underscoring his impact on both ends of the floor.
Against the Jazz, however, his night was cut short. Zion Williamson finished with just four points, one rebound, and two assists in 11 minutes of action before being ruled out.
Pelicans secure win, but concerns linger
Despite losing their star forward mid-game, the Pelicans managed to secure a 115-105 victory over the Jazz. The win showcased the team’s resilience, yet the spotlight quickly shifted to Williamson’s health.
The organization has not disclosed the severity of the right ankle injury. Further testing is expected to determine whether this is a minor tweak or something that could sideline him for an extended period. For a team fighting to stabilize its season, any prolonged absence would be a significant setback.
