Pakistan drop to ninth with a PCT of 19.05.

India can climb to fourth with a Sri Lanka win.

England gave Pakistan a harsh reality check in the first Test at Headingley, wrapping up the game in just two and a half days. The hosts posted a commanding 409 before their bowlers took complete control, with Pakistan's combined tally across two innings still falling short of England's first-innings score.

An innings-and-103-run loss not only gave Pakistan a horrible start to the series but also damaged their position in the race for 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) final. The setback has pushed them into further trouble in the standings, with their situation now worse than that of the West Indies.

Pakistan's difficult position in WTC standings

Bangladesh's win against Australia in the opening Test has helped them to remain at the fourth place in the ICC World Test Championship 2027 standings. Pakistan, meanwhile, have slipped to the bottom of the standings after suffering their fifth loss in seven games, leaving them with a percentage of just 19.05. They now sit ninth, behind the West Indies, who sit at the eighth place with a PCT of 20.83. India are currently fifth with a point percentage of 53.33, while Australia continue to lead the standings despite their recent loss against Bangladesh, with a PCT of 77.78.

What happens if India defeats Sri Lanka in the second Test?

India have already taken the lead in the series after winning the first Test against Sri Lanka. Another win in the second Test could boost their position in the WTC standings. If India complete a series sweep and Australia also defeat Bangladesh, the Men in Blue would move up to the fourth place with a points percentage of 57.57. Bangladesh would consequently drop below India to fifth position.
