The Dallas Wings have officially begun restructuring their front office by hiring experienced WNBA coach Curt Miller as their new Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager. The team announced the move in a statement on Friday.
A veteran with experience
Miller, a seasoned coach with a wealth of experience in the WNBA, most recently led the Los Angeles Sparks. However, after a challenging two-year tenure with the Sparks, which saw the team finish with an 8-32 record, Miller and the organization mutually agreed to part ways in September.
Known for his leadership and strategic acumen, Miller is a two-time WNBA Coach of the Year, having earned the prestigious honour in 2017 and 2022. In addition to his coaching success, Miller made history in 2017 when he became the first individual to win both WNBA Coach of the Year and WNBA Executive of the Year in the same season, an achievement that was matched this year by Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve.
A busy offseason for the WNBA
Miller's appointment comes amid a flurry of changes in the WNBA, with several coaches on the move in what has been a hectic offseason. The Dallas Wings are also in the process of making changes, having recently parted ways with head coach Latricia Trammell following a disappointing 11th-place finish in the league standings.
The team will need to fill the head coach position ahead of the 2025 season, a task that now falls under Miller's purview as he assumes his new role.
A strong coaching legacy with the Connecticut Sun
Before his time with the Sparks, Miller spent several successful years with the Connecticut Sun, where he served as head coach from 2016 to 2022. During his tenure, the Sun made two trips to the WNBA Finals, further cementing Miller’s reputation as one of the league's top coaches. Miller was also promoted to General Manager of the Sun in 2016, holding both roles until his departure in 2022.
Challenges await in Dallas
Now, as he transitions to his new role in Dallas, Miller faces several significant challenges. Despite having standout players like guard Arike Ogunbowale and forwards Satou Sabally and Natasha Howard, the Wings struggled throughout the 2023 season, finishing with a disappointing 9-31 record. To further complicate matters, both Sabally and Howard are now free agents, leaving Miller with critical decisions to make in preparation for the offseason.
Miller's appointment signals the Wings' commitment to rebuilding and positioning themselves for success in the coming seasons. Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching to see how the new general manager navigates this pivotal period for the team.
