Fans took to social media to express their disappointment and gratitude for Samuelson.

Samuelson’s departure is the latest in a series of moves as the Fever overhaul their roster.

As WNBA free agency nears its conclusion, the Indiana Fever have been among the most active teams, making significant roster upgrades while also bidding farewell to some beloved players. On Monday morning, the Fever announced they had mutually parted ways with forward Katie Lou Samuelson, a key rotational player during the 2024 season.

Samuelson, who had one year remaining on her contract, appeared in 37 games last season, averaging 18 minutes per game.

The Fever’s official statement read, “We have mutually parted ways with forward Katie Lou Samuelson. Wishing you all the best, Lou.”

The decision has sparked an emotional reaction from Fever fans, many of whom are unhappy with the move. Samuelson was a fan favorite last season, known for her positive attitude and contributions on the court.

Fan Reactions Reflect Emotional Connection

Fans took to social media to express their disappointment and gratitude for Samuelson. One fan wrote, “Not very happy! Why?” Another commented, “Katie Lou, you are such a great teammate. You appeared to have a wonderful attitude, and it was fun cheering on your 3-pointers. Your baby is adorbs, and I will miss both of you. I wish you only wonderful things in the future.”

Samuelson’s 2024 season was a mixed bag. Returning to the court after giving birth to her daughter, Aliya, in August 2023, she struggled to meet expectations as a 3-point shooting specialist. She attempted just 2.7 three-pointers per game, shooting at a 33% clip, and averaged 4.3 points per game.

Declining Role and Contract Details

Samuelson started 15 games for the Fever but was eventually moved to the bench in favor of Kristy Wallace and later Lexie Hull. Her playing time decreased as the season progressed, and she finished with her lowest average minutes per game since her rookie season with the Chicago Sky.

Samuelson signed a two-year, $355,000 contract with the Fever ahead of the 2024 season, earning $175,000 last year. She was set to make $180,000 in 2025. Her contract is protected, meaning she is entitled to her full salary despite being released.

In similar situations, players often agree to a buyout for a reduced amount. For example, Victoria Vivians, who was owed $137,000 for the 2024 season, agreed to a $90,000 buyout with the Fever before signing with the Seattle Storm for the veteran minimum.

What’s Next for Samuelson?

According to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, discussions about Samuelson’s buyout terms have been ongoing for the past week. She has reportedly been in talks with four different teams about finding a new home.

Fever’s Busy Offseason Continues

Samuelson’s departure is the latest in a series of moves as the Fever overhaul their roster. Indiana has already signed three players with WNBA championship rings—Natasha Howard, DeWanna Bonner, and Sydney Colson—and acquired 3-point shooting wing Sophie Cunningham via trade.

As the Fever continue to reshape their team, fans will undoubtedly keep a close eye on how these changes translate to on-court success in the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Katie Lou Samuelson’s next chapter in the WNBA remains a storyline to watch.
