Stephen A. Smith has criticised the Los Angeles Clippers for trading Chris Paul to the Toronto Raptors on 4 February 2026, leading to his waiver and abrupt retirement announcement.
Stephen A. Smith calls out Clippers' "disgraceful" handling of Chris Paul’s final days
During his appearance on ESPN's First Take, the sports personality defended the former NBA player and criticised the Clippers. While speaking on whether he has a problem with how Paul's legendary 21-year NBA career ended, said:
“Yeah, I do. I do."
Smith then went on to criticize the franchise, calling the Clippers' handling of Paul's exit "disgraceful" multiple times.
The controversy stems from Paul's brief return to the Clippers in the 2025-26 season on a one-year deal, intended as a sentimental homecoming to finish his career near family in Los Angeles.
Instead, after appearing in just 16 games amid reported tensions, including criticism of the front office, the franchise traded the veteran point guard to the Raptors in a multi-team deal.
Paul was then waived by the team without requiring him to report, prompting Paul to announce his retirement just days later. This was the end of his 21-season Hall of Fame-caliber career without fanfare or a proper send-off after his emotional return to the Clippers.
