LeBron James and Michael Jordan are without an iota of doubt two of the biggest names in the sporting realm. Both have ruled the game of basketball for a prolonged period and defined the standards for the coming generations to follow. As their dominance is seen as identical, the debate around who is better, rather than who is the greatest of all time, picks steam all the time. However, has the never-ending discussion on who is the GOAT impacted their relationship as well?
LeBron James Opens Up On His Relationship With Michael Jordan
In a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee show, LeBron James opened up on what kind of relationship he shares with Michael Jordan, and it could be said that his revelation did not come as what the fans would have liked to hear. James expressed that his relationship with MJ is kind of complex.
“We don’t talk ’cause I’m still playing. [MJ] is one of the most ruthless competitors there is. MJ doesn’t want to talk to me until I’m done,” LeBron said.
According to James, the competitive spirit in MJ is still alive even when he is retired and thus they may not become close allies until he also hangs up his boots.
LeBron actually sees similarities in his relationships with Jordan and Kobe Bryant. James was never close with Bryant until they played together in the Olympics for Team USA in 2008 and 2012.
It wasn’t until LeBron joined the Lakers and Kobe retired that their relationship transitioned from a competitive one. “He (Kobe) like welcomed me and called me like, ‘Bro anything you need in LA, like I got you… You a Laker now, you family…’ We would have multiple conversations,” James added. Lebron hopes that the same could happen with Jordan.
Despite not sharing the affinity that the world wants them to share, there is still an undying connection between LeBron James and Michael Jordan. It is no secret that James considers Jordan as his idol. The Lakers superstar wears the number 23 jersey solely because MJ used to wear it in his playing days.
