Story Highlights:

Pelicans star Zion Williamson ruled out for at least three weeks, adding to his ongoing injury woes this season.

Rookie Derik Queen expected to see an increased role as New Orleans deals with multiple key absences.

The New Orleans Pelicans received an unfortunate update from star forward Zion Williamson. ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Tuesday that Williamson will miss extended time because of a right adductor injury. The forward had his left hamstring injury management and missed Sunday's game against the LA Lakers.

Zion Williamson's struggle with injuries

Williamson has appeared in just 10 games for the Pelicans this season. During that time, he's averaged 22.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists. It's early in the 2025-26 NBA season, and the two-time All-Star has struggled to stay healthy. Early in the season, the big man missed eight consecutive games because of a hamstring issue.

Charania reported that the former Duke star is expected to miss at least three weeks. The insider also disclosed that Williamson will be reassessed after the three weeks.

With Williamson's injury struggles, the Pelicans have not performed at their level best. The team has a 3-18 record and is at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. New Orleans is set to face the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight without their key player.

Aside from Williamson, the Pelicans will be short-handed against the Anthony Edwards-led side. Jordan Poole, Herb Jones and Karlo Matkovic are set to miss the clash.

Who will play in place of Zion Williamson's absence?

With their star player missing the game, the Pelicans could use someone to step up. Derik Queen, a rookie, might get more playing time based on the games he has missed this season.

Against the Lakers on Sunday, Queen played 28 minutes, registering 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists. The first-year big man has been somewhat of a fan favorite. This season, he's averaging 11.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists on 48.0% shooting from the field.
