A young Virat Kohli was detained in Indore for breaching security and hugging the cricketer during the second T20I between India and Afghanistan at Holkar Cricket Stadium.
Kohli was fielding at long-on when the fan climbed the fence of the spectators' gallery to meet the star cricketer. The cops took the fan to Tukoganj police station where he was being interrogated. He revealed that he entered the stadium from Narendra Hirwani Gate.
“Further steps will be taken in the case on the basis of interrogation,” the official told PTI.
The incident took place in the 18th over of Afghanistan's innings when Arshdeep Singh was bowling. Mujeeb Ur Rahman had hit a six on the fourth ball.
Earlier, Kohli made his return to T20I cricket after 14 months. He pulled out of the first T20I in Mohali due to personal reasons. This was his first T20I appearance since India’s semifinal exit after a 10-wicket loss to Jos Buttler’s England in T20 World Cup 2022.
Kohli on his return had to walk out early to bat in the run chase as skipper Rohit Sharma got bowled for a golden duck by left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi in the first over.
Kohli answered the criticism around his strike rate with a cameo. He hit his first boundary off the second ball he faced. In the second over, he hit Mujeeb Ur Rahman for two fours. The second boundary was more of a slog as he dragged the ball outside off stump and hit it over mid-wicket.
Kohli took on Naveen-ul-Haq. He hit the back of the length delivery over the bowler's head for a boundary. He went after Mujeeb again and drove it past the off-side field. In the sixth over, he hit another one over Naveen's head for his fifth four. On the next delivery, he was caught at mid-off. He contributed with a 16-ball 29 which helped India dominate in the powerplay overs.
After Kohli's wicket, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube's half-centuries helped India chased down the target of 173 with six wickets in hand and 26 balls to spare.
