Legendary India cricketer Kapil Dev feels that the Suryakumar Yadav-led team are good enough to win the Asia Cup 2025 and come home as champions. India will be facing-off against Pakistan on September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The Men in Blue made an incredibly strong start to the continental tournament and defeated UAE comprehensively by 9 wickets.
The Men in Blue bundled out the hosts for just 57 runs before chasing down the modest target in only 4.3 overs. Kuldeep Yadav and Shivam Dube were the top performers with the ball, picking up four and three wickets respectively. The batters already had their work cut short, but took up the opportunity of ending the match early and did so with a massive 93 deliveries to spare.
Openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill formed a strong stand of 48 runs to convert the match into completely a one-sided affair. The Men in Blue would eventually reach the target with a boundary hit by Gill and would go on to record a net run-rate of +10.483.
Following the dominant performance, Kapil feels that the current Indian side will 'come home as champions'.
"India should do well and come home as champions," Kapil told Sports Tak in an interaction.
When asked if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's retirements from the shortest format will affect India's performance in the tournament, Kapil expressed faith in the younger crop of players and remarked that it is their time to deliver now.
"Rohit Virat did well now its young generation time they have to prove," Kapil stated.
Rohit and Virat expected to feature against Australia
Notably, both Rohit and Virat are likely to make their return to international cricket with the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia which will commence from October 19. They can also feature in the one-day assignment against South Africa that will begin in November.
Coming to India's clash against Pakistan in Asia Cup, the BCCI has faced a lot of scrutiny ever since the clash was announced. This is due to the fact that the political relations between the two nations have deteriorated to an all-time low this year. It all began with the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April that saw 26 innocent people lose their lives. Then, India launched Operation Sindoor as a retaliation and unleashed attacks on the terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. That is why many people are against the idea of cricket teams from both the countries playing against each other in Asia Cup.
