Dinesh Karthik slammed selectors for not picking Shreyas Iyer in India's Asia Cup squad

Shreyas hasn't featured in T20Is for India since 2023

Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik was left surprised with Shreyas Iyer's omission from the squad for Asia Cup. Ever since the Men in Blue's 15-member squad for the continental tournament was announced, one of the main talking points has been Shreyas missing out on making the cut. Many were left surprised that the 30-year-old didn't make it to the squad despite having a stellar IPL 2025 campaign with the bat for Punjab Kings.

However, despite his brilliant form in the shortest format, Shreyas wasn't only snubbed from India's squad , but was also not given a place in the side's five-member reserve list. Karthik questioned the selectors' decision of not picking the batter and also stated that it is a 'bit unfair' that he will not be travelling with the Men in Blue to UAE for the tournament.

"Where is Shreyas Iyer? That's the big question, isn't it? How could he miss out? To a point, it's understandable. He wasn't part of the 15, considering how well team India have done. 17 out of the last 20 they have won so okay, continuity, fair. But not making him part of the other five players which you have earmarked for the near future with the T20 World Cup in mind?" Karthik said in a video on Instagram.

"Closing doors on him? That's a tad bit unfair and I hope it doesn't happen because he has done outstandingly well as a leader, but even better as a batter under pressure," he added.

Commenting on India's 15-member squad that selectors picked for Asia Cup, Karthik admitted that it is a 'very strong' team, but once again remarked that Shreyas should have atleast made it to the reserve list.

"The Asia Cup squad (is) very strong as you would expect any Team India squad to be. Shubman Gill back as vice-captain, which basically means that tried and tested oepners Samson and Abhishek, is there going to be a change there? And some good news for the RCB fans. Jitesh Sharma is back. How well has he done to come back into that team!" Karthik stated.

"Bumrah! You can only expect the best from him. It looks a solid squad but again Shreyas Iyer I feel should have been a part of the 20 for sure," he added.

Shreyas hasn't played a T20I for over a year

With Shreyas not featuring for India in Asia Cup 2025, his wait for making a comeback for the national team in the shortest format is set to continue. Notably, the 30-year-old last played a T20I in December 2023 and currently there is no guarantee as to when the selectors will choose him again for an assignment in the format.

India's squad for Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.
