In a big development to upcoming India-Australia T20I series, India's star pacer Umesh Yadav has been called as Mohammad Shami's replacement who has been ruled out of the series after testing positive for Covid-19.

Fast bowler Shami will not be able to take part in the upcoming three-day Mastercard T20I series against Australia after testing positive for COVID-19.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Umesh Yadav as his replacement.

Despite his sporadic appearances in international cricket, Umesh has been a regular in the IPL circuit and was among the best bowlers in the powerplay this past season, picking up 16 wickets overall at an economy rate of 7.06. He has recent form behind him as well, having topped the charts for Middlesex in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Umesh last donned the blue jersey back in February 2019. The Nagpur cricketer might not have been a regular member in India’s white-ball set up, but he has been very effective with the ball in hand during the IPL where he provided vital breakthroughs in the powerplay overs.

Talking about Mohammed Shami, he was not picked in the main T20 World Cup, was named in the squad to play a T20I for India after a long time, during the home series against Australia and South Africa.

He last played a T20I in the Twenty20 World Cup in the UAE, almost a year ago when he had finished with an underwhelming six for 140 in five games and a tournament economy rate of 8.84 in those games.

The Indian team is scheduled to fly to Australia on October 6 after the last home T20I against South Africa on October 4 in Indore. The World Cup in Australia is from October 16 to November 13.

India squad for Australia series: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav.
