Shreyas Iyer gave the selectors a good headache ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023. Coming back into the side after injury followed by an unlucky runout in the first match of the series, Iyer scored the third ODI century of his career.

He reached his century from 86 balls in the 30th over of the innings in the second ODI at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore on September 24.

Iyer was cramping and also had trouble with his left forearm. He got a reprieve reaching his century. Sean Abbott took a sensational catch off his own bowling diving to his right but did not take it cleanly. He was batting on 101 then.

However, he could not make the most of the second chance. After hitting a boundary, he took the aerial route again but got caught in by Matthew Short well inside the leg-side boundary. His 90-ball 105 featured 11 fours and three sixes.

Iyer and opener Shubman Gill shared a 200-run partnership for the second wicket after Ruturaj Gaikwad departed early. It is the fifth 200-run partnership for the second wicket in ODIs against Australia.

“My focus was on the cramps, it wasn't allowing me to hold (the bat) firmly. I was almost out caught and bowled, I realised that my top hand wasn't working. When I was reaching the boundary line, I decided I am going to try and smash every ball. I felt that I got the team in the right position,” Iyer said during the innings break.

"I was happy throughout the innings. My mindset was to play the ball in the V. I wasn't focusing a lot on hitting the ball hard, I wanted to time it,' the 28-year-old added.
