Matthew Wade was almost at a loss for words when discussing Glenn Maxwell's extraordinary performance in the third T20I against India, played on Tuesday, November 28, at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. In a display of sheer batting prowess, Maxwell achieved the joint-fastest T20I century by an Australian, reaching the milestone in just 47 balls. This remarkable innings was crucial in Australia's pursuit of the massive target of 223, which they reached on the last ball of the match. Maxwell's final stroke, a ground shot off Prasidh Krishna, clinched the victory, needing just two runs to win.
During his knock, Maxwell hit eight boundaries and an equal number of sixes, tying Rohit Sharma's record for the most centuries in T20Is.
"You don't get much better than that. It was always going to take our best and probably the best player of T20 cricket we have," Wade said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
This achievement was all the more notable given that earlier in the game, Maxwell had conceded 30 runs in his final over, contributing to India's significant total of 222 for three. Wade explained that Maxwell was brought into the attack following Kane Richardson's injury.
"I wouldn't say "confident" was on my mind, but we knew here we can bat in chases. When we had five overs left but unfortunately Kane Richardson hurt himself so we were one short and had to bowl Maxi," he stated.
The match marked a significant transition for the Australian team, as six players who participated in the World Cup are set to return home. In light of the departure of these key players, Wade emphasized the opportunity for younger players to rise to the occasion and demonstrate their abilities in the remaining matches of the series.
"We really needed this win and a lot of guys are heading home so a chance for the younger ones and hopefully we can take it to the decider with another win," Wade added.
