Sanju Samson was the notable omission from the T20I squad against Australia.India and Australia will go up against each other for a five-T20I series.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India's squad for the five-T20I series against Australia starting November 23 in Visakhapatnam. Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the second-string side in the absence of Hardik Pandya who has been out injured. Suryakumar will be India's 12th T20I captain.

Ruturaj Gaikwad who led India to Asian Games 2023 gold medal glory has been named Suryakumar's deputy for the first three matches. Shreyas Iyer will join the squad for the last two matches as vice-captain.

The second T20I will be played on November 26 in Thiruvananthapuram. The third T20I will be played in Guwahati followed by the fourth and fifth T20I in Nagpur and Hyderabad respectively.

From the squad for ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, only Suryakumar, Ishan Kishan, Iyer, and Prasidh Krishna have been included in the squad. Axar Patel has returned to the squad after getting injured in a dead rubber Asia Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh. Patel suffered a left quadriceps strain and was replaced by Ravichandran Ashwin in the World Cup squad.

The notable exclusion from the T20I squad is wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. Meanwhile, there were also reports that Riyan Parag may receive his maiden T20I call-up after a sensational Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023 season. But Parag did not find a place in the squad. Yuzvendra Chahal is another player who missed out on featuring in the T20I squad as the selectors favoured Ravi Bishnoi.

After the heartbreaking six-wicket loss in the World Cup 2023 final, India will look to start their preparations for the T20 World Cup 2024 against the champions of the 2021 edition. India and Australia have played 26 T20Is against each other so far. India have won 15 of them, lost 10 whereas one ended in no result.

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia (CA) is yet to announce the squad for the T20I series. Like India, it is expected to be a second-string squad as Australia will play Pakistan in a three-Test series at home starting December 14.

India’s squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vc), Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dubey, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, Shreyas Iyer (for last two T20Is)
