This recent exploit starkly contrasts Yadav's showing in the ODI World Cup 2023. In that tournament, he accumulated only 106 runs across seven matches, averaging 17.67 with a strike rate of 100.95. This disparity in performances across formats has further fueled the narrative that Yadav’s prowess in T20Is significantly overshadows his ODI batting.
Understanding Suryakumar Yadav’s dominance in T20Is requires a deeper dive into his cricketing prowess. When discussing T20I greats, Virat Kohli’s achievements are often cited. Kohli’s record of 4000+ runs at an average of 52.73 in 115 matches, including 15 player of the match awards, is a testament to his mastery in the format. However, at 35, Kohli is no longer the foremost choice in India's T20I setup, having not played a T20I since India’s loss to England in the T20 World Cup.
Enter Suryakumar Yadav, who since his induction into the Indian T20I team on March 14, 2021, has shown extraordinary impact. In just 54 T20I matches, Yadav has earned 12 player of the match awards. His rapid approach to closing in on Kohli’s record, despite playing significantly fewer matches, speaks volumes about his impact.
Yadav’s struggles in ODIs, however, present a different story. Despite being given ample opportunities before the ODI World Cup, Yadav was unable to firmly establish his position. His average soars to 53.73 at No. 4, playing 29 matches with 1182 runs. His 360-degree batting style thrives outside the powerplay, complemented by the shorter format’s intensity.
ODI Positioning: Contrarily, Yadav's batting position in ODIs has been inconsistent. Used as a floater, he often bats for 50-60 balls, aiming for maximum impact. However, his average has not crossed 40 in any position except No. 3.
IPL Experience: Yadav's extensive T20 experience, with 264 T20 and 54 T20I matches compared to 139 List A matches, has shaped his gameplay. His limited exposure in ODIs and the Indian team's attempt to provide him with a defined role, especially with KL Rahul's presence as an anchor, has restricted his opportunities in the 50-over format.
