Adam Zampa got the beating of a lifetime from Heinrich Klaasen at SuperSport Park, Centurion in the fourth ODI on September 15. Zampa conceded as many as 113 runs in his full quota of 10 overs and bagged an embarrassing record. This is the joint-most runs conceded by a bowler in ODI cricket. He shares the record with former Australia pacer Mick Lewis who had conceded 113 runs from 10 overs.

The previous most expensive ODI appearance for a spinner was of Afghanistan's Rashid Khan. The leggie had conceded 110 runs from nine overs against Afghanistan in ODI World Cup 2019. Interestingly, Lewis conceded 113 runs against South Africa as well. It happened in the iconic highest-run chase in ODI cricket in Johannesburg in 2006.

Zampa was introduced by stand-in Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh in the 16th over of the innings. He conceded nine runs from his first two overs. In the 20th over, Rassie van der Dussen hit him for three consecutive fours. In the 24th over, he conceded 14 runs. Dussen hit him for a six in that over as well. After conceding 38 runs from five overs, he was taken off the attack.

He was brought back into the attack in the 34th over, Klaasen hit him for another six. David Miller hit him for a maximum as well in the next over. In his ninth over, he conceded 18 runs from the over. Klaasen and Miller hit him for a six each.

After conceding 87 runs from nine overs, Zampa was not expected to return in the slog overs. But Marsh decided to go with his experienced leggie again in the 48th over against red-hot Klaasen and Miller. Miller welcomed him with a boundary. He followed it up with a wide. When Klaasen got the strike he hit the ball for a massive six. He flashed the blade two more times and hit the ball way back into the stands to make it a 26-run over. Zampa remained wicketless and conceded 113 runs.

No Australian spinner had gotten a beating of this order in ODI cricket before. The previous record for highest runs conceded by an Australian spinner belonged to Steve Smith who conceded 78 runs against West Indies in 2010 at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
