South Africa's cricket squad is facing an uphill battle in the ongoing ODI series against the formidable Australian team. Adding to their woes, they've just encountered a major blow with their prominent pacer, Anrich Nortje, being sidelined due to a back injury. This development puts a damper on the Proteas' hopes as they prepare for the pivotal third ODI against Australia.

During South Africa's 123-run defeat to Australia in the second ODI, Nortje experienced lower back spasms, compelling him to leave the pitch after just five overs. While he did make a brief return to the field, further medical assessments beckon. Slated for scans in Johannesburg this coming Monday, the 29-year-old cricketer's participation in the imminent third ODI on September 12 stands nullified.

The stakes are particularly high for the South African team, not just because of the ongoing series but due to the approaching ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. With the inaugural match for the Proteas, scheduled against Sri Lanka on October 7 in Delhi, the results of Nortje's scans will be keenly awaited. South Africa, already lagging 0-2 in the five-match ODI series against Australia, finds itself in a must-win situation to keep their hopes alive in the series.

With only three ODIs left, it's imperative for the Proteas to elevate their performance and secure consecutive victories to turn the tables. On the flip side, Australia, led by Mitchell Marsh, is on the brink of clinching the series. A triumph at Sedgars Park in Potchefstroom in the upcoming game would hand them an insurmountable series lead.

Post the conclusion of this high-voltage series, South Africa will shift its gaze to the grand ICC event in India. Gearing up for the World Cup, the Proteas have two preparatory matches lined up against Afghanistan and New Zealand on September 29 and October 2, respectively. The big kickoff to their World Cup journey will be the match against Sri Lanka on October 7.

As fans and analysts keenly watch the unfolding of events, the focus remains on the recovery of Nortje and South Africa's strategy to tackle the Australian challenge in his absence.

Schedule for remaining ODIs:

Tuesday, 12 September – 13:00 Local time – JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom

Friday, 15 September – 13:00 Local time – SuperSport Park, Centurion

Sunday, 17 September – 10:00 Local time – DP World Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
