India secured a comprehensive victory over Australia to end the side's dominant run in T20Is in 2022 with a thrilling win in super over to level the five-T20I series 1-1 at the DY Patil in Mumbai on Sunday, December 11. Chasing 187 for the win, Smriti Mandhana's knock of 79 runs in 49 balls almost went in vain, if not for Richa Ghosh and Devika Vaidya’s cameos that levelled the scores and took the game into super over.
Eventually, Richa and Mandhana set a daunting target of 20 runs for their opponents, who were unable to chase it down and scored just 16 runs in their stipulated one over. After the game, opener Mandhana and her teammates were grateful to the team's fans for the overwhelming support that the side received during the second T20I.
"Thank you everyone for coming. Amazing, amazing atmosphere. We all just love people who come to support us and yeah, unreal, unreal game. Didn’t expect, but I think it was all possible because of the crowd and their support," Mandhana said after the match.
India defeated Australia in front of over 47,000 spectators at the DY Patil Stadium. Along the way, they also handed Australia their first defeat in 2022 as they took a victory lap to thank the fans who turned up for the contest.
Mandhana's special message was shared with the fans on a BCCI video.
It was an exceptional win for the Women in Blue, who were facing a tough task ahead of them. After Harmanpreet won the toss and opted to field first, skipper Alyssa Healy started the attack in the powerplay itself, but Deepti Sharma broke the opening partnership. Then, Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath launched a brutal onslaught once they got settled in the middle.
The duo went on to register a 158-run partnership for the second wicket, which is the highest T20I partnership against India.
The two sides will take on each other in the third T20I at the same venue on Wednesday, December 14.
