Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal on September 30 scripted history in Test format. Rohit and Jaiswal went all guns blazing in the second session of the second Test at Green Park, Kanpur on September 30. They got the team’s score to fifty runs in a matter of three overs. This is the fastest fifty in Test cricket history. The previous record belonged to England when they scored 50 runs from just 4.2 overs against West Indies earlier this year at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
The fifty-run partnership is also the fastest in Test cricket. Jaiswal made his intentions known early on with three consecutive fours off Hasan Mahmud, the pacer with a five-wicket haul in the first Test. Rohit got off the mark with a massive six off Khaled Ahmed. He followed it up with another six. Khaled sprayed one down the leg side to evade Rohit's fury as he went to the other end. In the next over, Rohit hit Mahmud for a six as well. Then Jaiswal took on Mahmud hitting a six and two fours as the partnership turned 50.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto introduced off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz into the attack. Rohit hit a four and two balls alter was given out lbw. He opted for DRS and the decision was reversed. Frustrated after umpire Richard Kettleborough's decision, Rohit was outsmarted by Miraz off the next ball. He fell after scoring 23 runs from 11 balls. The openers shared a 55-run partnership from 23 balls.
Rohit's rare feat
Rohit is also the fourth batter to hit sixes off the first two balls faced in a Test innings. The first to achieve the feat was West Indies' Foffie Williams against Jim Laker in 1948. 65 years later, Sachin Tendulkar did it against Nathan Lyon in 2013. Lower-order batter Umesh Yadav achieved the feat against South Africa's George Linde in 2019.
Earlier in the day, India bowled out Bangladesh for 233 from 74.2 overs. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten for 107 while wickets fell at the other end.
