Michael Vaughan speaks on Phil Salt.

England's star opener has been failing to make an impact with the bat in the 50-over format lately. His dismal run continued from the white-ball series against India to the ongoing edition of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Former English captain Michael Vaughan was unimpressed with his outings in the mega tournament and called out the batter, saying that he is better than just teeing off on every ball. It might work in T20s but not ODIs.

Michael Vaughan on Phil Salt

"I just don’t understand that approach from Phil Salt .. he has to be better than just teeing off every ball in a 50 over game .. T20s no probs but not in this format .. #ChampionsTrophy2025," Michael Vaughan wrote from this official 'X' acount formally known as Twitter.

Phil Salt's dismal show in the Champions Trophy

The England star scored only one fifty-plus in the recent white-ball series against India, which spanned eight matches: five T20Is and three ODIs. His struggle got worse in the Champions Trophy, as he scored only 10 against Australia, 12 against Afghanistan, and 8 against South Africa.

Salt's inability to give his team a good start was also one of the major reasons for England's early exit. At the time of writing, England have been reduced to 114/6 by the 21st over. Phil Salt returned to the dugout in the very first over itself. He smashed two boundaries but was dismissed on the final ball of the opening over.
