After missing Monday's victory over Bangladesh due to illness, star top-order batter Daryl Mitchell has proclaimed himself fit to play against India in New Zealand's last Champions Trophy group match. Before Sunday's match in Dubai, which will determine which team wins Group A and which teams they play in the semifinals, the Black Caps and India are both undefeated and guaranteed a place in the last four.
"Obviously, disappointing to miss the last game with being a bit crook. It’s nice to be back with the group now and get out of the hotel room and to be involved in training and looking forward to the next match. It’s another game of cricket that I’m just really excited to represent our country in, and it should be good fun come Sunday," Mitchell said.
In Rawalpindi, Mitchell was replaced in the batting order by Rachin Ravindra, who was returning after suffering a head injury and recovering from a concussion. He scored a brilliant 112 and helped the Black Caps secure their place in the knockout stages.
Therefore, even though coach Gary Stead has hinted that he may rest players with niggles for the India match, he is presented with a bit of an embarrassment of riches in the batting area. The fact that a range of batters were making significant contributions to games was unquestionably advantageous to Mitchell.
"Something that we pride ourselves on is that when the situation dictates, you do your job for the team. I’m sure another set of hands will stick their hands up over the next few games and hopefully help us win games," he said.
