India's in-form batter Shubman Gill is set to play for Glamorgan in his maiden County Championship stint. Gill's participation for the remainder of the 2022 season is subject to visa clearance.
Gill will become the seventh Indian player to get signed by a county side. Before him, six other Indian players have played County Cricket.
Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Washington Sundar (Lancashire), Krunal Pandya and Mohammed Siraj (both Warwickshire), Umesh Yadav (Middlesex) and Navdeep Saini (Kent) have featured in England’s domestic cricket so far.
Gill will become the third Indian player to play for Glamorgan. Before him, former India head coach Ravi Shastri (1987-91) and current Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly (2005) have played for Glamorgan as well.
Gill has been in top form of late. He scored 245 runs at an average of 122.50 including his maiden ODI century against Zimbabwe in the three-ODI series. Earlier, he scored 205 runs at an average of 102.50 against West Indies in as many ODIs.
In the longest format, Gill has donned the Indian jersey in 11 Tests and scored 579 runs at an average of 30.47 including a terrific knock against Australia in the famous Gabba win. Of late, he opened the innings against England in the rescheduled Edgbaston Test in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Gill could not do much against English fast bowlers and registered scores of 17 and 4 in the Test.
