South Zone batters could not capitalise on Day 3 of Duleep Trophy final after Vidwath Kaverappa took a seven-fer to bundle out West Zone for 146. With a 248-run lead in the bag at the end of Day 3, the game is still delicately poised between the two teams at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium despite a flop show with bat by West Zone.
Kaverappa mops up the tail
Starting the day at 129/7, West Zone tailenders could add only 17 runs on the board as Kaverappa picked right where he left off and took three more wickets to complete his seven-fer, his First-Class career-best bowling figures. Apart from Prithvi Shaw, no batter made an impact as there were seven single-digit scores in West Zone's first innings. South Zone took a 67-run lead.
Decent starts, no big scores
Chintan Gaja and Arzan Nagwaswalla got the new ball talking. Ravikumar Samarth and Tila Varma got out for single-digit score. From 8/2, the partnership between Mayank Agarwal and skipper Hanuma Vihari helped South Zone recover. Agarwal could not score a half-century and became Nagwaswalla's second victim of the day. He scored 35 runs from 68 balls including seven fours.
Vihari could not get to his half-century either. Medium pacer Atit Sheth ended Vihari's stay at the crease. He scored 42 runs from 89 deliveries including seven fours. Similarly Ricky Bhui and Sachin Baby got off to good starts but could not go on to get big scores. Bhui was trapped in front of the wickets by Dharmendrasinh Jadeja. He scored 37 runs from 69 deliveries including four fours. Baby got bowled by Sheth. He scored 28 runs from 55 balls including four fours. Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore tried to score quickly but became Jadeja's second wicket.
Clear task for Day 4
Washington Sundar (10*) and Vijaykumar Vyshak (1*) remained unbeaten as South Zone posted 181/7 on Day 3 with 248-run lead in the bag. On Day 4, South Zone lower-order batters have their work cut out. They will look to set a target in excess of 300 to put West Zone batters under pressure.
