The ongoing Test series between India and England have so far seen an impressive display of power hitting, with batters from both teams brandishing their six-hitting prowess. Dhruv Jurel's spectacular six over long-off on Day 2 of the fourth Test against England has turned this series into the one with the highest number of sixes hit. Despite expectations that England's aggressive strategy would lead to them hitting the majority of the sixes, India's young talents, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan, have proven that they too can dominate the opposition with their attacking play. Jaiswal, in particular, has consistently been sending the ball over the boundary for sixes and fours.
Record for most sixes in a Test series broken!
Previously, the Ashes series held the record for the most sixes in a Test series, with Australia and England, the fierce rivals, clashing last year to produce a total of 74 sixes. The 2013/14 Ashes series saw 65 sixes being smashed.
In 2019, the Test series between India and South Africa also witnessed 65 sixes, while the series between Pakistan and New Zealand in the UAE in 2014 saw batters hitting 59 sixes. With one more Test match remaining and players from both teams maintaining an aggressive approach, the total number of sixes is expected to increase significantly by the end of the series.
The Test series between India and England set a new record for the most sixes, with 75 being hit during the fourth Test. Dhruv Jurel's maximum over long-off brought the series' six tally to 75.
Yashasvi shatters Sehwag's record
Earlier, Indian opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal has etched his name in the annals of cricket history by breaking Virender Sehwag's 16-year record for the most Test sixes in a single calendar year. During the fourth Test of the captivating five-match series against England, held at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi, Jaiswal not only showcased his exceptional talent but also demonstrated his knack for creating monumental records.
Most sixes by an Indian batter in a calendar year
Yashasvi Jaiswal leads the chart with an impressive tally of 23 sixes hit in the year 2024. Following closely, Virender Sehwag set a benchmark with 22 sixes back in 2008. Rishabh Pant showcased his power-hitting skills with 21 sixes in 2022. Rohit Sharma, known for his elegant six-hitting, recorded 20 sixes in the year 2019. With a majestic six off England spinner Shoaib Bashir, Jaiswal vaulted past Sehwag's impressive mark, achieving this remarkable feat in merely his fifth match of 2024. Sehwag, a former dynamo of the Indian batting lineup, had originally set the record in 2008, across 14 matches and 27 innings. Jaiswal's tally now stands at 23 sixes, surpassing not only Sehwag's record but also Rishabh Pant's impressive total from 2022.
