Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal broke several records in the recently concluded five-Test series against England at home. Jaiswal was backed by the team management, head coach Rahul Dravid, and skipper Rohit Sharma. Jaiswal repaid their faith by scoring 712 runs from nine innings and playing a crucial role in India’s 4-1 series win over Ben Stokes’ England. While Jaiswal has earned the praise of several current and former cricketers, Rohit opts not to talk much about his opening partner and wants to just let him be.
On being asked about Rohit's reactions to questions about him, Jaiswal said that he does not want to disclose the dressing room conversations.
“It’s so good to have him there inside the dressing room. It has been great to play under him. There are a lot of moments which I don’t want to disclose at the moment. Let it be with me. The way he backed players throughout this journey, the way he talks, the way he bats. Whatever happens, he will be there to stand by you. I think it’s incredible to see that in your leader. I will keep learning from him,” Jaiswal told the Indian Express.
Rohit's advice to tackle off-spinners
Rohit is pretty candid on the field and it was on display during the England series. Jaiswal recalled how Rohit's advice helped him counter England's right-arm off-spinners Shoaib Bashir and Joe Root.
“He came and told me that in that moment that shot is not on, it will be better to hit straight. So I was trying to hit straight. I must tell you nothing misses his eyes. He knows everything. That is the biggest quality. He is aware of things and what is going on. Alag level hai, it’s so fun to be around him,” the left-handed batter said.
Jaiswal to be back in action soon
Jaiswal is now gearing up for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 where he will be opening the innings alongside Jos Buttler for Rajasthan Royals (RR). RR will begin their campaign against KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at their homeground in Jaipur on March 24.
In the previous season, the 22-year-old was RR's highest run-scorer. He scored 625 runs from 14 games at an average of 53.25 including one century and five half-centuries. His strike rate of 163.61 is also the highest among the top five run-scorers of IPL 2023.
