Former India head coach Ravi Shastri advised that the Rohit Sharma-led side will need to manage legendary pacer Jasprit Bumrah's workload during the upcoming five-Test match series against England, which is scheduled to start from June 20. He advised that we rest Bumrah after the first two tests.
The upcoming five-Test match series against England will begin the new World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. This will be India's first international assignment after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph.
Team India will be eager to bounce back in the red-ball cricket after a dismal outing in their previous assignment in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Australia defeated India 3-1 in the five-Test match series to seal their berth for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
“I would be very, very careful [with Bumrah]. I would give him two Tests at a time and then wait for the break. Ideally, make him play four. You’ll be tempted to make him play five if he starts in a great manner, but it’s how his body pulls up," Shastri said while speaking on the latest episode of The ICC Review.
“He should be given the first opportunity to say, ‘Yes, a little, [I am] feeling the niggle. A break would help.’ Give him that break," Shastri added.
One of India's struggles in Australia was the availability of their pace attack. Both Mohammed Shami and Bumrah have battled injuries. Mohammed Siraj struggled Down Under and was dropped from their Champions Trophy team.
After missing the Champions Trophy 2025, Siraj has made a strong comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, featuring for the Gujarat Titans (GT). The speedster picked up 12 wickets in eight outings till now. He has regained his form and the veteran duo of Shami and Bumrah have recovered from injuries.
Shastri believes that if India's trio of Bumrah, Shami and Siraj are fully fit, then they will give a lot of problems to England. He also lauded Siraj for his comeback after getting dropped from the Champions Trophy 2025 squad.
“I think with Siraj, Jasprit and Mohammed Shami, these three, if they are fully fit, they will give England heaps of problems. It’s a quality, top-class pace attack when you get these three fit," Shastri said.
“And what I like about Siraj, I’m glad he was hurt after being put out, not on the side for the Champions Trophy. That’s what you want. For him to go back to the drawing board and come back the way he has, there’s a spring in his stride, the pace is up there and he means business game after game," Shastri added.
