Indian captain Rohit Sharma was asked about Jasprit Bumrah's injury status on the eve of the first ODI against England which is scheduled to be played on February 6. Rohit Sharma admitted that team still remains uncertain about Jasprit Bumrah's fitness and recovery. Notably, India and England are set to play a three-match ODI series .
Bumrah picked up a gruesome back injury during the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. Bumrah was forced to leave the field midway through the first innings and did not take the field at all during the second innings.
Meanwhile, Bumrah was initially included in India's ODI squad for England series but was later removed. He recently underwent scans at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to assess the severity of his injury and determine a potential timeline for his return to action.
Rohit Sharma on Jasprit Bumrah's fitness
Meanwhile, Rohit, on being asked about Bumrah's fitness, said the team is waiting on some update about his scan which is due to happen in the next few days.
“Obviously, we are waiting on some update about his scan and stuff which was due to happen in the next few days. Once we get that scan, we will be able to give you more clarity on where he is," Rohit said during the pre-match press conference ahead of ODI series against England.
Bumrah has been included in India's 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19. However, his participation in the eight-team tournament is contingent upon his recovery and fitness assessment.
With Bumrah's availability uncertain, Rohit Sharma is focused on evaluating Mohammed Shami, who recently returned to international cricket in the third T20I against England in Rajkot. Shami's absence since the 2023 ODI World Cup final had raised concerns about his form and fitness.
However, the Indian captain stressed on Shami's consistent past performances for the country and expressed his intention not to rush to judgment. Drawing on his own extensive playing experience of over a decade, Rohit hopes that Shami's experience will prove invaluable to the team.
“He has not played cricket for 1 or 1.5 years. So, don’t judge the player so soon. He has been playing cricket for the last 10-12 years. He has performed for the team. You can see how he has bowled in the World Cup," Rohit concluded.
