On a very bright Sunday afternoon at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, England all-rounder Sam Curran decided to walk out to bat with sunglasses in the ODI clash against West Indies. Curran walked out to bat at no.8 in the 42nd over after Harry Brook was dismissed. Curran contributed with a 26-ball 38 while sporting the sunglasses.
Curran’s videos of batting while sporting sunglasses have been making rounds on social media.
Curran took his time at the start. In the 43rd over, he took on Oshane Thomas and hit him for two boundaries. In Thomas' next over, he hit the first maximum of his inning. In the 48th over, he was dismissed run out after a terrible mix-up with Brydon Carse. He smashed two sixes and three fours in his 38-run cameo. He could have gone on to score his second ODI half-century had it not been for the run-out dismissal.
England lower order batters managed to add 20 more runs to the score after Curran's wicket. England posted 325 on the board after Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bat first.
The left-arm pacer was not impressive with the new ball conceding 30 runs from four overs as Alick Athanaze took him on from the start. In the middle overs, he was brought back into the attack. He did not leak runs this time conceding just nine from two overs.
In the 40th over, he conceded six runs. He was wicketless but had conceded 45 runs from seven overs. It was in the slog overs, he was taken to the cleaners by Romario Shepherd and Shai Hope. In the 43rd over, Shepherd hit two sixes and a four. In the 45th over, he conceded 15 more runs. He was given the responsibility to bowl the penultimate over. West Indies needed 19 off the last two overs. Hope hit three sixes to finish off the run chase.
Curran ended up conceding 98 runs from 9.5 overs. He now holds the record for conceding the most runs for an English bowler in men's ODIs. Steve Harmison and Chris Jordan held the previous record as they conceded 97 runs each against Sri Lanka (2006) and New Zealand (2015) respectively.
