Head's explosive start in the match was a dream beginning for Australia, who were put into bat by New Zealand. Despite facing early short-ball challenges, Head displayed remarkable composure and confidence on his World Cup debut. His opening partnership with David Warner was formidable, amassing 118 runs in the first powerplay and setting a strong foundation for the team.
"It's nice to be back with the boys. I was there for a couple of weeks, but coming back and playing in the middle was excellent. Nice to be in the fixture, nice to be playing, and it is nice to be back. Nice to contribute. It was a very good wicket," Head told Star Sports in the mid-innings break.
Although Warner departed after scoring 81 runs, Head continued to dominate the Kiwi bowlers and reached a century in his maiden World Cup appearance. His outstanding performance brought Australia to a commanding position.
"The hand felt good. It felt comfortable, and well, I felt back on track, which is nice. I think Davey and I just looked to play aggressively and forged a partnership. Looked to go as hard as we could, and yeah, it was nice. 388 looks like a brilliant total. After my innings, the pitch started to get a bit more spin, and the slower bowlers got some purchase of it, and they did bowl well," Head added.
However, Australia faced a brief setback when Mitchell Marsh and Steven Smith were dismissed in their attempt to accelerate the scoring. At 274-5, it seemed Australia might lose their momentum. Nevertheless, Glenn Maxwell played a crucial role in reviving the innings, smashing 41 runs off just 24 balls.
The real fireworks came from Josh Inglis and Pat Cummins, who put together a blistering 62-run partnership, propelling Australia's total beyond 380. At one point, they appeared on course to reach 400, but a series of late wickets forced them to settle for a total of 388.
Travis Head's sensational debut century, along with the contributions of other key players like Warner, Maxwell, Inglis, and Cummins, powered Australia to an imposing total.
