On the belter pitch of the Arun Jaitley stadium, Bas de Leede created an embarrassing World Record of bowling the most expensive spell in the history of ODI cricket. The star Netherlands' bowler conceded 115 runs in his spell of 10, thereby marking the most expensive bowling spell ever in One Day International cricket.

Earlier, Australian Mick Lewis held the record for most expensive over bowled in the ODI cricket. During South Africa versus Australia's ODI match in in Johannesburg in 2006, Aussie pacer Mick Lewis gave away 113 runs in his 10 overs, without snaring any wicket.

Meanwhile, it was during the concluding over of de Leede's spell that Glenn Maxwell seized the moment to clinch the fastest World Cup century in an astonishing manner, hammering him for two boundaries and a three sixes, resulting in a whopping 28 runs off the over. Maxwell cracked his century in 40 balls.

Initially, de Leede started off his spell on a positive note, managing to contain the Australian batters by maintaining a decent economy rate. But as the innings progressed Australian batters changed gears and started taking Netherlands' bowler to cleaners, especially de Leede.

Leede nearly had Australian opener David Warner dismissed, only for the decision to be overturned by the third umpire. Warner went on to notch his second century of the ongoing ODI World Cup.

While de Leede managed to claim the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Inglis, but his efforts went in vain as Australia ended up posting 399 on the board. Efforts to alter his line, length, and strategy bore no fruits, as the Aussie batters dispatched him across the field with ease.

Adding to de Leede's record for the highest runs conceded in an ODI, he now also holds the unwanted record of the most expensive spell in a World Cup match. This record was previously held by Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, who had given away 110 runs without claiming any wicket in his nine overs against England during the 2019 World Cup.
