The International Cricket Council (ICC) had released the World Cup 2023 schedule in June, where the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium was primed to host the clash between India and Pakistan on October 15 in Ahmedabad. As soon as the schedule was announced, fans began their preparations. Hotels in Ahmedabad witnessed a spike in bookings, and in no time, the majority of them were fully occupied.
However, a short while after the original schedule was released, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, indicated that there would be some adjustments to the World Cup timetable. Consequently, in August, the ICC issued a revised schedule, in which nine matches, including the one between India and Pakistan, were rescheduled. The pivotal India-Pakistan match was moved up by a day to October 14.
The primary reason for this shift was security concerns. The original match date, October 15, coincided with the first day of the Navratri festival, a significant event celebrated with great fervor across Gujarat. Given the significance of the festival, the police expressed concerns about providing adequate security on the same day for such a massive international cricket match. The need for substantial security measures for both teams and the sheer scale of the festival led to the police's apprehension. Acknowledging these concerns, the ICC made the decision to hold the match a day earlier, ensuring safety and smooth proceedings for what promises to be one of the most-watched games of the tournament.
