Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has showered praise on the performance of captain Rohit Sharma in the World Cup 2023 match against England. Gavaskar believes Rohit's 87-run innings held more value than a century in the challenging conditions of Lucknow, where the top order faltered.

In the match, Rohit Sharma showcased his adaptability and leadership qualities. He initially displayed aggressive intent during the powerplay but later shifted gears to stabilize the innings as wickets fell around him. Rohit's innings of 87 runs from 101 balls was instrumental in rescuing India from a precarious situation. He even took on David Willey, amassing 17 runs from a single over before being dismissed by Adil Rashid in the 37th over.
Sunil Gavaskar commended Rohit Sharma for adjusting his approach according to the team's requirements in the ongoing World Cup 2023 and for playing like a true captain.
"Rohit Sharma's innings against England was a captain's innings worth more than a hundred as he tailored his approach according to the needs of the situation," Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Khaleej Times.
He also applauded KL Rahul, who batted at number 5 and played a pivotal role alongside Rohit in the low-scoring match against England.
"Rahul once again showed how important it is to have an opener batting at number 5 because he could deal with the new ball and stabilise the innings with skipper Sharma," he added.
Gavaskar expressed his hope that Team India would continue their winning momentum and showcase their determination to win the World Cup on home soil. The Indian team has been in exceptional form, securing victories in all six of their group-stage matches in the World Cup 2023.
They initiated their campaign with a convincing six-wicket win over Australia and continued their winning streak by defeating Afghanistan by 8 wickets. Subsequently, they outclassed arch-rivals Pakistan with a 7-wicket win, followed by victories over Bangladesh and New Zealand by 7 wickets and 4 wickets, respectively. In their latest encounter, the Indian bowlers successfully defended a modest total, securing a commanding 100-run victory over England.
"India must not loosen up and keep the winning tempo going as it sends a message to the opposition that they are determined to win the trophy at home," Gavaskar added.
This impressive run has positioned India as one of the top contenders for the World Cup title, with Rohit Sharma's leadership and performances playing a crucial role in their journey so far.
