Warner highlighted Cummins' resilience, noting his strong comeback following criticism during the Ashes and Australia's initial losses to India and South Africa in the World Cup. Cummins demonstrated his skill and leadership as he led the Australian team to restrict India to a total of 240 runs in 50 overs. His pivotal spell included the crucial wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli, the latter being the Player of the Tournament and the top run-scorer of the event.
"He has been so calm the whole time. He was criticised in England for his field placements, which were defensive and all that. He copped it again when we got off to a slow start. It's not fair. The captain is leading the ship, but as a whole unit, we take responsibility ourselves," Warner was quoted as saying in an interview with AB de Villiers.
Cummins' contribution was vital in Australia's World Cup journey, ending with 15 wickets across 11 matches at an impressive economy rate of 5.75. His best figures in the tournament, 3 for 51, came against South Africa in the semi-final at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. His performance not only showcased his individual brilliance but also underlined his importance to the Australian side, both as a bowler and a leader.
"Yesterday was a testament to the way we went about it. As a captain, to be brave and make a decision was phenomenal. Yesterday, the way he bowled was unbelievable. That was his best spell in the whole tournament. Great players stand up when it's time to deliver and yesterday, he truly did that," Warner added.
