Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison has advised Ben Stokes to skip the final two World Cup 2023 games and prioritise his recovery so that he is fully fit for the Test series against India in early 2024. Harmison is of the opinion that the series in India is anticipated to be significantly more challenging than the Ashes.

It is noteworthy that Stokes has confirmed his decision to undergo surgery to address his long-standing left knee issue. This choice comes after England's elimination from the 50-over tournament, as they faced their sixth defeat in seven matches.

Steve Harmison stressed the significance of Ben Stokes taking sufficient time to recuperate, considering his crucial role within the team. England's past two Test series in India have been far from memorable, with heavy defeats of 4-0 in 2016 and 3-1 in 2021. Interestingly, it is worth mentioning that England was the last team to secure a Test series victory over India on their home turf.

"You never know what they are going to find with a major operation, or what the rehabilitation process will entail. Therefore, allow yourself the additional time as it could make the difference between being completely fit for the first Test or the third. The most crucial individual in that Test setup is Ben Stokes."

"They need their leader, and that's why he has to return home. This tour is going to be twice as challenging as the Ashes due to the conditions, so he will be more crucial than ever," Harmison stated in an interview with the PA News Agency.

Harmison further emphasised the necessity for someone within the management to take charge and make the decision for Stokes to head back home. He described this move as a matter of 'common sense.'

"I'm sure that conversation has taken place, but it requires strong leadership. Someone needs to say, 'Ben, you're going home. Here's a ticket, there's the plane, get on it.' I think Rob Key, as the director of cricket, should probably make that decision, and if I were the Test coach Brendon McCullum, I would do everything possible to encourage him."
