Aiden Markram-led South Africa cricket team defeated Rashid Khan's Afghanistan by 9 wickets in the first semi-final of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, on June 27 (Thursday). This is the first time that the Proteas side have reached the Final of this mega tournament. They also end Afghanistan's dream run in this edition of the marquee event. They will now be facing the winner of the India vs England semi-final.
Proteas bowlers shine on big stage
Afghanistan was coming into this match with good wins over teams like Australia and Bangladesh. Their bowling attack even allowed them to defend low scores. The Proteas bowlers had one job of putting them under pressure right from the very beginning and they did that really well. South Africa managed to restrict Afghanistan to just 56 runs and threw the Asian side on the backfoot. Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi grabbed three wickets each. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje had two scalps in front of their respective names. Their lethal bowling attack bowled out Afghanistan by the 12th over itself.
South Africa seal final spot
Proteas had a target of 57 runs in front of them which they managed to chase down by the 9th over itself. They got off to a slow start as Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi did not give them much opening and restricted them from scoring runs freely. Farooqi even dismissed Quinton de Kock with a beautiful delivery in the second over itself. This even boosted their confidence in making a comeback but Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks held their end patiently and helped their team successfully chase the low target. This win ensured that Proteas will be playing their first-ever T20 World Cup final and will now be waiting for the result of the other semi-final which will be played between India and England to find out about their opponent for the grand finale.
