Shehzad has been critical of Babar Azam's approach of late.

Out-of-favour Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has continued his attacks at skipper Babar Azam after their dismal show led to an early exit from T20 World Cup 2024. Shehzad feels that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi made the worst decision by reappointing Babar as the captain of the team.

Babar had stepped down as captain across all formats after Pakistan failed to make it past the league stage in ODI World Cup 2023. Shaheen Afridi was made T20I captain but he was removed from the post after Pakistan's tour of New Zealand. The move did not work as Pakistan lost to USA and India. They registered their first win against Canada and will take on Ireland in the dead rubber clash on June 16.

"Making Babar Azam was the worst decision by the PCB chairman because he was a tried and tested captain. Wahab Riaz has handled things very unprofessionally," Shehzad told Geo News.

Shehzad lists players who need to leave

Shehzad wants the selectors to let go of players like Babar, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf. He feels there is a lack of leadership in the side.

"If you look into their cricket for the last four years, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi and Fakhar Zaman have been constants. Haris Rauf is also there. They have got more time than what a lot should get. And there are groupings in the team and lack of leadership is visible," Shehzad said.

“They say that we are learning from our mistakes; what are you learning? Against Canada, you had to improve your net run rate and Rizwan scored the slowest fifty. Babar Azam scored 33 at a run-a-ball. There were no demons on the pitch. Personal milestones have destroyed our cricket and the condition of our cricket is because of them. You don't have leadership, the only thing you have is social media generate king. You have won nothing in the last five years; you don't have fitness; you are playing politics; your cricket is on the decline. You have only stuck to friendships," added the 32-year-old.
