Sri Lanka suffered their second straight loss of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 after suffering a 2-wicket defeat at the hands of Bangladesh in match 15 of the mega tournament which was being played at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, on June 8 (Saturday). After the match, the SL captain Wanindu Hasaranga blamed the batters for their loss and said they had disappointed their team in both games.
Wanindu Hasaranga slams SL batters
SL batters got a good start in their first 10 overs as they only lost three wickets but constant breakthroughs restricted the former champions to just 124/9 in 20 overs. As a result despite a thrilling contest in the second innings, Bangladesh managed to chase it down in 19 overs. A few more runs would have potentially shifted the match towards the Lankan Lions. Tauranga was disappointed with this and called out the batters of his team.
“We started really well in the first 10 overs but in the middle overs we batted badly. Bowling is our strength. If we had got 150-160 we could have won with our bowling attack. The batters let us down in both games. We still have two games and we will try to do our best. Maheesh and myself are the two main spinners and we have to attack,” said Hasaranga in the post-match presentation.
Bangladesh pick their first T20 World Cup win over Sri Lanka
The win is special for Bangladesh as this is their first-ever win against their Asian rivals Sri Lanka in the marquee event. Batting first SL could only post 124 runs. Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain picked three wickets each. Taskin Ahmed picked two and Hasan Sakib got one. The chase was not easy, Bangladesh lost 8 wickets and went till the penultimate over to complete it. Nuwan Thushara picked up four wickets but it was outshined by Towhid Hridoy's 40 off 20 balls and Litton Das' crucial 36-run knock.
