Conway and Finn Allen are yet to be declared fully fit ahead of T20 World Cup 2024.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead is hoping that the New Zealand squad will regain full fitness before boarding the flight to Americas for ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. Devon Conway had a surgery after he sustained a thumb injury in February. The injury ruled him out the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Another New Zealand opener Finn Allen missed the T20I series against Pakistan due to a back ailment. Both openers are currently undergoing rehabilitation.

"Finn Allen's in the nets here behind us at the moment so he's tracking along nicely," Stead told reporters at the Kiwi team’s training camp at Mount Maunganui on May 16 as quoted by the PTI.

"He's still got a little bit of pain in his back but our plan this week is to progress them up and put more intensity through his training each day. Devon's over at the IPL still and he is tracking nicely. He's been wicketkeeping and batting in the nets on a regular basis. He's back home at the end of the week. We'll have a look at him early next week and make sure that he's good to go as well."

Conway was ruled out of IPL 2024 last month. England pacer Richard Gleeson was named his replacement. However, the 32-year-old continues to be with the CSK contingent.

A number of players from New Zealand's T20 World Cup 2024 squad are currently playing in the IPL 2024 for their respective teams. In their absence, a second-string side led by Michael Bracewell travelled to Pakistan and did reasonably well willing the two T20Is in the five-match series.

The rest of the members of the square are trailing on three different surfaces at Bay Oval to prepare for the T20 World Cup. He is not bothered about by the absence of a warm-up game before their clash against Afghanistan on June 7 in Georgetown, Guayana.

"There's a number of guys who've been in the IPL for the last two months and we've also recently come off the tour to Pakistan," he added. "There's a lot of experience in the group, who have played in the Caribbean Premier League before, so we'll be leaning on those guys and making sure the training we get in prior to the first game gets us to where we want to be."
