India Test captain Shubman Gill will reportedly be appointed as the team's ODI captain for the upcoming three-match series against Australia, which is scheduled to start from October 19. Batting legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will also be part of the squad against Australia.
The Indian Express reported that Gill’s appointment is likely after the selectors spoke to the Test skipper, informing him that, keeping the big picture in mind, they wanted him to captain the side for the ICC World Cup in 2027 to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, and he also attended the selection meeting on Saturday.

When will BCCI announce the India squad?
The BCCI will reportedly announce India's squad for the white ball series against Australia on October 4. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side in the T20Is, and according to the Indian Express, Shubman Gill to lead India in ODIs. India chief selector will announce the squad followed by a press conference after the post match conference of the 1st Test against West Indies.
Notably, this will be Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's first outing since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand at Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. After India's ICC Champions Trophy win, the batting duo announced their sudden retirement from the Tests.
On the other hand, there are reports that the likes of Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant won't be available for the tour as they are recovering from their respective injuries. Pant had sustained a toe fracture during the Manchester Test against England in July, and Pandya had got a quadriceps injury during the Asia Cup, which forced him out of the final against Pakistan.
