While KL Rahul had a stroke on luck on first ball of Day 4 as his catch was dropped by Steve Smith in the slip cordon, skipper Rohit Sharma's poor run in Test cricket continued. Rohit played a loose shot outside off stump as he edged one to wicketkeeper Alex Carey off Australia captain Pat Cummins' bowling.
This is the sixth time Cummins has dismissed Rohit in Test cricket. Only Nathan Lyon (9) and Kagiso Rabada (7) have got the wicket of Rohit in the longest format more than Cummins.
This is also the fourth instance of Cummins as captain dismissing captain Rohit Sharma. The 37-year-old departed after scoring just 10 runs from 27 balls including five fours.
Rohit's poor run in ongoing season
This is Rohit's seventh consecutive disappointing score in the format. In the ongoing 2024/25 season (starting with Bangladesh Test series at home), the veteran batter has a disappointing average of 8.85 in the first innings. His best score in the first innings in current season is just 23 runs.
In 2024, he has scored 607 runs from 23 innings at an average of 26.39 including two centuries and two fifties.
Cummins moves up
With Rohit's wicket, Cummins surpassed his teammate Mitchell Starc on the list of Australian bowlers with most wickets against India. He is followed by Starc (61) wickets, Josh Hazlewood (57 wickets). As the Gabba Test progresses, there can be a shuffle in the list as well.
Rahul hits fifty, rain interrupts again
While Rohit struggled and lost his wicket, opener Rahul made use of the second chance and scored his 17th Test half-century. He took 85 balls to reach the milestone.
India were 105/5 after 30.5 overs when rain interrupted the first session of play at The Gabba, Brisbane. Rahul was not out for 68 whereas Jadeja was yet to cross the single-digit score.
