Australian opener Cameron Bancroft and all-rounder Daniel Sams sustained injuries following their unfortunate collision on the field during Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 clash between Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers on January 3 at Optus Stadium, Perth.
In a vital update, Sydney Thunder said that Bancroft has suffered a fracture nose and a fractured right scapula. He is set to undergo further assessment in the next few days. He is likely to get ruled out of the entirety of the ongoing BBL season.
Meanwhile, Sams has sustained a concussion. He will miss Thunder's next clash at The Gabba against Brisbane Heat on January 6. The two are expected to miss at least next four BBL matches.
"Both players in good spirits and well looked after last year," Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said on Channel 7. "The Perth Scorchers and the medical staff on ground and the hospital staff were incredible all through the night. Big thanks from me and the Thunder and both players and their families.
"Two incredibly tough individuals as well. Talk to anyone about Cameron Bancroft and how he plays the game and what he is made of. He is tough stuff. Bangers was watching the game last night and watched every ball right to the conclusion."
The BBL franchise thanked Perth Scorchers and Cricket Australia for lending their support.
"Sydney Thunder would like to thank medical and other staff on hand following the accident, including those from the Perth Scorchers, Cricket Australia and our own staff," the statement said.
"Cameron and Daniel have received the best care possible and we will support them and their families as they recover from their injuries," it added.
Bancroft misses golden opportunity
Bancroft was one of the contenders for the opening spot in the Test side. However, Nathan McSweeney got the nod. After McSweeney's disappointing scores, teenager Sam Konstas was included in the squad. Considering Usman Khawaja's lack of form, Bancroft could have found himself in the pre-tour camp in UAE ahead of two-Test series in Sri Lanka. It is yet to be seen whether he will be able to recover before the camp.
