Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and opted to bat first but the decision did not turn out to be a fruitful one. Mominul Haque was the only batter who endured Indian bowlers for long and scored a half-century as they managed to post 227 from 73.5 overs. In reply, Indian openers scored 19 runs from eight overs as bad light stopped play at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka.

KL Rahul made a big decision at the toss and announced that Kuldeep Yadav will warm the bench and included Jaydev Unadkat in the side. Unadkat was brilliant with the new ball but the outside edge kept eluding him. In his fifth over, he got his maiden Test wicket in the form of opener Zakir Hasan (15). One wicket led to another as Ravichandran Ashwin trapped Najmul Hossain Shanto (24) in front of the stumps.

Mominul and Shakib prevented more wickets from falling in the first session as hosts score read 82/2. Right after the lunch break, Umesh was handed the ball again and he dismissed Shakib (16) who played a poor shot only to find mid-off fielder Cheteshwar Pujara.

Experienced Mushfiqur Rahim started out with caution. It was evident that the pitch will offer assistance to spinners. Musfiqur decided to attack and hit Ashwin for three consecutive fours. As the partnership was growing Rahul brought back Unadkat into the attack. Bowling from around the wicket, Unadkat forced Mushfiqur (26) to play down the wrong line and edge one to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. The two batters shared a 48-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Litton Das walked out with the intention to attack as well. Meanwhile, Mominul got to his half-century from 78 deliveries. Mohammed Siraj who remained wicketless was taken the cleaners with a four and huge six. The counter-attack was ended by Ashwin. He scored 25 runs from 26 deliveries.

In the third session, Umesh broke the partnership between in-form Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Haque. Miraz (15) threw his bat at a delivery he should have left alone and got caught by Pant.

Umesh got two more wickets of Nurul Hasan (6) and Taskin Ahmed (1) as Bangladesh suffered a collapse. Then Ashwin got the big wicket of Mominul with a carrom ball. Mominul scored 84 runs from 157 deliveries including 12 fours and one six. The veteran Indian bowler then got rid of Khaled Ahmed for a two-ball duck.

Bangladesh lost five wickets for just 14 runs and got all out for a disappointing first innings score of 227. For India, Umesh and Ashwin picked up four wickets each whereas Unadkat got two scalps on debut.

When Indian openers came to bat, it had gone relatively dark as the lightometer was taken out by the umpires more often. With footmarks forming already, the pitch offered much spin. Rahul survived a scare as he was given out lbw off Shakib's bowling but upon reviewing hawkeye showed that the ball was missing the stumps. Shubman Gill (14) batted more freely and hit a four and six each whereas Rahul (2) tried to block it out. At Day 1, Stumps, India were trailing by 208 runs.
