East Zone has been crowned the Duleep Trophy champions for the third time after their final against South Zone ended in a draw at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. The result was decided by East Zone’s massive first-innings lead. Kumar Kushagra contributed a century as East Zone built an unassailable total. South Zone replied with 336, Tilak Varma top-scoring with 99, leaving East Zone with a lead of 372 runs. On the final day, East Zone declared their second innings at 388 for 7.
Debutant-style heroics came from Md Kounain Quraishi, who scored an unbeaten maiden first-class century of 116, while Anukul Roy made 64 and Kishan added 80. Mohammed Siraj also contributed with intensity and pace.
The declaration confirmed the draw and secured the title. East Zone’s previous Duleep Trophy wins came in 2011-12 and 2012-13. This victory ends a 13-year wait and marks a strong statement in domestic cricket under Kishan’s leadership.
