Rohit Sharma became the full-time captain of Team India in November 2021. A lot was expected from the national team after he took over. Since then, India have done well in bilateral series but faced defeat in the last Test match that they played — back in July. It is also worth noting that Rohit has not captained the side in any Test matches abroad since taking over the captaincy!

From November 2021 to December 2022, Rohit has not played in any overseas Tests due to various injuries. The latest case is the ongoing two-match series in the Bangladesh tour.

Rohit was a part of their ODI series against Bangladesh but hurt his thumb during their second match of the competition. He took over Test captaincy at the beginning of the year after their tour of South Africa. But since then, Rohit has played only two of the three Test matches that India have played, and with him missing the first game against Bangladesh, this record will be two of four Tests.

Struck with Covid before England Test
Rohit was supposed to captain India during this one-off Test after he became the permanent captain of India across all three formats. But just before the game, he was struck with Covid and was forced to sit out of the game. In the absence of KL Rahul, who missed the England game after sustaining an injury ahead of the T20I series against South Africa.

In the absence of both Rohit and Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah took over the captaincy of the team as India had to face defeat as the Englishmen equalled the series 2-2.

Thumb injury ahead of Bangladesh Test

Rohit Sharma was supposed to take over the captaincy during the Bangladesh tour, but then got injured during the second match of the ODI series. The injury took place in an attempt to take a catch in the slip, but the ball hit his thumb. This injury forced him out of the final ODI, and he is also set to miss out on playing the first Test as well, with Abhimanyu Easwaran called in as his replacement.

All that is left to be seen is whether he will be able to play the second Test or not. But going by his affinity for missing Test matches played abroad, it seems like Rohit will finish the year without captaining a single Test as a visitor in 2022.
