Prior to Gill's remarkable innings, no Indian captain had ever achieved a double century in a Test match against England in England. The highest score previously held by an Indian captain in such a fixture was Mohammad Azharuddin's 179 at Old Trafford in 1990. Gill has now surpassed that record, becoming the first Indian skipper to reach a double ton on English soil.

Gill's remarkable innings of 269 elevates him to an exclusive echelon of Indian batsmen, making him only the sixth Indian to score 250 or more in a Test innings. He now stands alongside legendary cricketers such as Virender Sehwag, who accomplished this feat four times, as well as V.V.S. Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Karun Nair, and Virat Kohli. What sets Gill's knock apart from those of his predecessors is that it was achieved outside the Indian subcontinent. This makes it the highest-ever Test score by an Indian batter on foreign soil, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's previous record of an unbeaten 241 in Sydney back in 2004.
