Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, Jamie Overton and Matthew Potts line up for the anthems before the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley on June 23, 2022 in Leeds, England.

Story Highlights:

Gus Atkinson was unavailable for selection due to hamstring injury.

Jamie Overton has been picked in the squad despite injury.

Overton has made a comeback to the Test squad after 3 years.

England Cricket Board (ECB) on June 5 announced a 14-man squad for the first Test of the five-Test series against Shubman Gill-led side. Gus Atkinson has been ruled out due to injury sustained during one-off Test against Zimbabwe. Jamie Overton who made his Test debut against New Zealand three years ago has made a comeback.

Overton was recently ruled out of the white-ball series against West Indies due to a broken little finger during series opener. Overton took three wickets but the injury ruled him out. He made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and is in the scheme of things for all three formats.

The first Test will begin on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. It will be the first time Gill will lead India in a Test match since Rohit Sharma's retirement.

Coincidentally, Overton's one and only Test appearance was at Headingley as well. He got a wicket each in the first innings and registered a 97-run knock in debut innings. He walked in to bat at 55/6 and shared a match-winning 241-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Jonny Bairstow who scored 162.

Players missing from the one-off Test squad vs Zimbabwe

Apart from injured Atkinson, pacer Matthew Potts and 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter James Rew did not find a place in the squad. While Rew is yet to make his Test debut, Potts was a part of the Test series against New Zealand last year. He has 36 wickets from 10 Tests at an average of 29.44, including two four-fers.
