Harry Brook missed out on a century as he remained stranded on 99 on Day 3 of the 1st Test vs India

Prasidh Krishna got the better of Harry Brook in the 88th over

Harry Brook was well on course of a well deserved century until Prasidh Krishna gave him a heartbreak to remember on Day 3 of the first Test between India and England at Headingley. Prasidh Krishna got the  better of Harry Brook when the England batter was batting at 99.

With this Brook bagged an unwanted record, becoming the first batter in three years to be dismissed while agonizingly close to a century, at a score of 99 runs. The last instance of a batter falling just one run short of a hundred occurred when Australian cricketer Travis Head was dismissed for 99 against the West Indies in Perth back in 2022. Before Brook, the most recent English batter to experience this heartbreak was Jonny Bairstow, who was dismissed for 99 against South Africa in Manchester in 2017.

In the overall context of English cricket, Brook's dismissal marks the 16th occasion of an English batter being dismissed on the score of 99. Interestingly, former middle-order batsman Ian Bell holds a unique record as the only Englishman to have been dismissed on 199, just one short of a double century.

Looking at instances of batsmen being dismissed on 99 against India, the last such occurrence was in 2014 when Shaun Marsh of Australia was dismissed at that score in a match played in Melbourne.

Watch Harry Brook's dismissal here:

Brook put on a show with the bat in the Test series opener, making the most of the opportunities presented to him by Team India. The right-handed batter adopted an aggressive style of play, even taking on Jasprit Bumrah, considered the world's premier bowler, with great determination. He frequently charged down the pitch to hit Bumrah for boundaries, demonstrating his positive intent. Brook appeared well-set to achieve a century in the match, but he unfortunately fell just short of this milestone, getting dismissed in the 88th over of the innings.

The dismissal occurred on the third ball of the 88th over when pacer Prasidh Krishna bowled a short delivery to Brook on the leg stump. The English batsman attempted a hook shot in response. However, Harry Brook did not have complete control over his shot, and the ball flew towards the long-on boundary where Shardul Thakur was positioned. The all-rounder completed a straightforward catch, leaving Brook with the disappointment of being dismissed just one run short of his century.

The England batter was visibly distraught after getting out for 99 runs off 112 balls. He looked back with agony, covered his face, and walked back to the dressing room in disappointment at missing out on a hundred on his home ground.
