The Ben Stokes-led England registered a thrilling 22-run win at Lord's to take 2-1 lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. The win helped them rise to the second spot on the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table. However, they have now slipped to the third spot, below Sri Lanka. The reason behind the one-position slip is the two-point deduction for maintaining slow over rate in the third Test of the series. In addition, they have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee.
England now have 22 points from three games. Their win percentage has dropped to 61.11.
"This was as per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time," the ICC said in its release.
"England captain Ben Stokes pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction imposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Due to this, there was no need of a formal hearing.
"The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Ahsan Raza and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd," it added.
Here is the updated WTC points table -
Position | Team | Played | Wins | Loss | Draw | Points | Percentage |
1 | Australia | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 36 | 100 |
2 | Sri lanka | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 16 | 66.67 |
3 | England | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 22 (-2) | 61.11 |
4 | India | 3 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 12 | 33.33 |
5 | Bangladesh | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 4 | 16.67 |
6 | West Indies | 3 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
7 | New Zealand | - | - | - | - | - | - |
8 | Pakistan | - | - | - | - | - | - |

This isn't the first time England have been docked points for slow over rate. In the previous WTC cycle, England were docked 22 points which played a huge role in them missing out on maiden WTC final spot.
When Stokes was infuriated by ICC sanctions
Last year, Stokes took a dig at the ICC as England were docked three WTC points despite an eight-wicket win against New Zealand in Christchurch within four days.
"Good on you ICC. Finished the game with 10 hours of play still left," Stokes had written in an Instagram story.
